All marine patrol vessels and the U.S. Coast Guard monitor channel 16 on the VHF marine radio.
The Coast Guard monitors this channel 24 hours a day. Reserve "mayday" only if grave Your boat is taking on water, there's a fire on board, a person is overboard, there's been a collision, or someone on board has a serious injury. "Mayday" is an international distress signal. It comes from the French verb m'aidez, which means "help me." When you call for a mayday, not only will the Coast Guard and/or a marine patrol vessel respond, but other boaters who are monitoring the frequency may respond as well.
